Why The Penguin Doesn’t Need a Second Season: Colin Farrell’s Insights and HBO’s Limited Series Vision

"The Penguin: Colin Farrell Discusses the Possibility and Necessity of a Second Season"

DC star Colin Farrell discusses the potential for a second season of *The Penguin*. As audiences anticipate *The Batman – Part II*, Matt Reeves is broadening his cinematic universe by bringing *The Penguin* to television. The series will focus on Oz Cobb following the events of the initial film, marking the first time a Batman adversary headlines his own DC series, offering Penguin a fresh spotlight.

In a conversation with *Total Film* (via *GamesRadar*), Farrell addressed the likelihood of a second season for *The Penguin*. While he cherished the opportunity to delve deeper into his character within Reeves’ realm, Farrell expressed uncertainty about his interest in returning for another season, stating:

“I don’t know, man. Don’t get me wrong – I loved it – but it got in on me a little bit. By the end of it, I was complaining to anyone who would listen that I desperately wanted it to be over. I tried to remind them that I had ‘grumpy gratitude.’ I was still grateful and honored – I grew up watching Burgess Meredith [who portrayed the character in the ’60s TV series], and then Danny DeVito [in Tim Burton’s 1992 film *Batman Returns*] was my Penguin – so being part of that storytelling lineage, I truly felt privileged. But by the end of it… It’s not like I lost myself and went on a rampage, but… when you combine what Matt Reeves created with Lauren [LeFranc, showrunner] and Mike [Marino, prosthetics and make-up designer]’s contributions, it was a really powerful experience.”

Why *The Penguin* Doesn’t Need a Second Season

Although *The Penguin* has yet to debut, the idea of HBO renewing it for another season feels premature. Certain narratives don’t require more than a single season, particularly since Farrell is set to reprise his role as The Penguin in *The Batman – Part II*. If a second season were to materialize, it would result in a prolonged wait for audiences, given that filming for *The Batman – Part II* is slated to commence early next year.

The Penguin Show Cast & DC Character Guide

Moreover, HBO and DC Studios have articulated that *The Penguin* is intended to be a limited series, with a single season already factored into the overarching narrative plan. It’s also noteworthy that even if *The Penguin* concludes after its initial season, another *The Batman* spinoff series is in development, potentially shifting the focus to different characters. With the array of characters that Reeves can introduce into his universe, the possibilities are limitless.

It will be intriguing to watch how Oz’s journey is further developed in *The Penguin*, as he is poised to play a significant role in *The Batman – Part II*. Whether other characters from the HBO series will have important roles in the sequel remains uncertain, but it wouldn’t be surprising if Reeves sows seeds through other cast members. With just a week remaining before *The Penguin* series premiere, the *Batman* universe is preparing to expand.
