Neil Gaiman has proposed stepping aside from the third season of “Good Omens” amid allegations against him. “Good Omens,” a series available on Prime Video, originates from the 1990 novel “Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter,” co-authored by Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. The TV adaptation launched in 2019, with Gaiman serving as showrunner and contributing as a writer or co-writer for each episode. Recently, it was announced that the production of “Good Omens” Season 3 would be paused due to the controversy surrounding Gaiman.
According to Deadline, Gaiman has apparently proposed withdrawing from the third season to facilitate the show’s continued production. The report mentions that Gaiman extended this offer to Prime Video and the “Good Omens” producers, suggesting that his withdrawal might help resume production, which had been stalled due to allegations of sexual assault against him.
Understanding the Allegations and Their Impact on Productions
Gaiman has been accused by five women of sexual assault.
The accusations against Neil Gaiman emerged over the summer when four women appeared on a Tortoise Media podcast, claiming that he had sexually assaulted them. Two of these women had been involved in otherwise consensual relationships with him. Subsequently, a fifth individual shared their story on the “Am I Broken: Survivor Stories” podcast. Gaiman has strongly denied all allegations. As reported by Deadline, his offer to step down does not imply an admission of guilt. The release of these allegations left both the industry and fans in disbelief.
Every Neil Gaiman Adaptation Ranked
Gaiman has not acknowledged responsibility for any assaults and continues to deny the accusations. Whether he will maintain this stance if he steps down from “Good Omens” Season 3 remains uncertain. Importantly, this proposed step back does not serve as an admission. Should Gaiman exit the series, a new showrunner would assume control. It is unclear how many scripts have been completed or whether they would be utilized. Given Gaiman’s significant involvement, the show’s quality may be impacted if it proceeds.
Seasons 1 and 2 of “Good Omens” are currently available on Prime Video.
It is uncertain if Prime Video will accept Gaiman’s offer, leaving the future of “Good Omens” Season 3 in limbo. The announcement of the project’s pre-production pause was made just last week, indicating that Prime Video is likely still deliberating. Besides “Good Omens” Season 3, the allegations have also affected other projects, such as an adaptation of Gaiman’s “The Graveyard Book.” If Gaiman’s departure from “Good Omens” results in the continuation of the season, other projects involving him might follow suit.
