The Vampire Diaries film has received an exciting update from Julie Plec, the co-creator of the supernatural teen drama. The series, inspired by L. J. Smith’s novel of the same name, debuted on The CW in 2009 and quickly became one of the network’s most successful long-running shows. It spawned various offshoots, including comic books, novels, and several spinoff series that have achieved moderate success. Although The Vampire Diaries concluded in 2017, Plec has been hinting at the possibility of a movie ever since.
In a conversation with The Hollywood Reporter, Plec discussed the idea of a Vampire Diaries film that could reunite the original cast and delve back into elements of the original narrative. She acknowledged the difficulties in creating such a movie, especially since many characters met their demise during the series. Nevertheless, she sees this as an enjoyable challenge. “You know what, Paul Wesley and I were literally just texting two days ago because he saw the news about the Twilight animated show and he’s like, ‘Why aren’t we doing this?’ And I said, ‘Good question. We should do this.’ There are so many opportunities to keep this world alive and keep this franchise going. For me, it’s just about the right idea and the right time, like I’m game. Leslie Morgenstein started talking about a Vampire Diaries movie in like season two, so I’m sure that it’s something that he still continues to pursue quietly. We’ve talked about all kinds of different ways to revisit parts of the story that we love or to tell a new version of the story. I know that those conversations are always happening. I personally know that there is a story that I would like to tell if anyone will have me eventually, so we shall see.
The tricky part of a vampire story is that your character is not supposed to age, right? So it makes it more complicated, and also 90 percent of them died before the show ended, so it makes the idea of a sequel or a prequel very complicated. But there are still ways that you can pay homage to the central characters and revisit those characters and some of the ideas I have in my head are ways to do that. However, whoever takes on the next chapter of The Vampire Diaries’ story, if it’s me or somebody else, they will have their work cut out for him because all those hundreds of episodes across all three shows, like a lot of stories have been told, so it’s not without its challenges but it’s a fun challenge.”
Is A Vampire Diaries Movie A Good Idea?
It May Be Too Late With The Original Cast.
Several years after the debut of The Vampire Diaries, the series expanded into a larger franchise, beginning with The Originals. This spinoff capitalized on the original show’s popularity by introducing new characters and deepening the supernatural mythology. The Originals was successful enough to lead to another spinoff, Legacies, which was unfortunately canceled in 2022 when The CW decided to cut several series targeting teens and young adults.
Following the cancellation of Legacies, The Vampire Diaries universe has largely remained dormant. Given the franchise’s enduring popularity, a prequel film to the original series could be a compelling way to revisit the world and its characters. However, there are significant obstacles to returning to this universe, particularly the narrative. Furthermore, the cast has aged, while their vampire characters are expected to remain ageless in the series.

One promising storyline for the proposed Vampire Diaries movie could center around Bonnie and the Bennett witches. Bonnie was a fan-favorite character, and many believe she deserves redemption for the injustices she faced in the original series. Although there is currently no continuation of the universe, the co-creator remains engaged in the vampire genre with a new series.
